Location

The old powder factory by the Alna River has been transformed into a charming area with two excellent saunas and Oslo’s coziest bar and café. Many still experience the place as a hidden gem “for those in the know.” Welcome to Oslo’s primeval forest!

Public Transport

You can reach the area by taking the metro to Brynseng, bus 37 to Etterstad Vest, or bus 34 to Kværnerbyen. From all these stops, it is approximately a 10-minute walk to Kroloftet and Kruttverket at Arnljot Gellines vei 41.

The Saunas

Jurten and Svarttrosten are open from Wednesday through Sunday. Each sauna accommodates up to 14 people. They are very different in character.

Jurten is easily accessible on a flat area outside the café. As the name suggests, it is a yurt — a nomad-inspired round tent. Inside, seating is arranged in an amphitheater around the two stoves. The sauna offers a warm and cozy atmosphere and is known for its particularly good löyly (steam). Outside the sauna, you can cool off in a cold shower and plunge pool. On Sundays, family sauna sessions are held in Jurten.

Svarttrosten is architect-designed and adapted to the steep hillside by the river. Inside, there are three different seating levels. The sauna has a large window with views over the river and the primeval forest of Svartdalen — truly meditative. Outside, Svarttrosten has its own changing area, cold shower, and cold plunge pool. On Saturday mornings, naked sauna sessions are offered in Svarttrosten.

The saunas are located on the grounds of the Kruttverket bar and café, which has a license to serve alcohol. Bringing your own drinks is therefore not permitted, but drinks purchased in the bar may be taken to the saunas.

Drinking Water and Toilets

Drinking water is available at the showers. Toilets are located in the café building adjacent to the saunas.

Family Sauna

Every Sunday, you and your children can participate in a child-friendly sauna session in Jurten from 10:30 to 12:00. Children aged 4 to 8 attend for free, but free tickets must be booked. Maximum two children per adult. Note: the Kruttverket café opens at 11:00. Book tickets here.

Naked Sauna

On Saturdays from 8:30 to 10:00, naked sauna sessions are held in Svarttrosten. Book tickets here.
